    Overheating/coolant shoots out of radiator

    First off the car will not really overheat when i driving however it does sometimes. I also noticed if i start the car with the radiator cap off the coolant shoots out of the radiator with serious force and goes everywhere. I also noticed that as the car is trying to start the motor kinda of seizes for a sec then proceeds to trying to start. I am not sure what the problem is, possibly bad headgasket? I do not have coolant in my oil nor does the car smoke. Also if the car is cold it will start right up although it still does the seize thing will trying to start, but if the car is warmed up ill have to keep spinning the motor with my foot to the floor for a good 20-30secs before the car starts, and as it is starting it sounds like its on 3 cylinders then maybe 4-6secs later it clears up...almost like its flooded. Please help. I was thinking of doing a headgasket.

    when does your car overheat?? while idling and standstill or on the highway....it can be numerous things ...thermostat,water pump, or your fans arent coming on.. be more specific and we can help u out

    Of course cooland shoots out the radiator with the cap off. The cooling system runs under pressure.

    This sounds like it could be a few things...sorry the worst of them all is #1. maybe a cracked sleeve, but highly unlikely... raidiator fluid SHOULD NOT shoot out of any engine that is cold on startup. a coolant system is not pressurized at that point....EVER!!!!! that brings me to #2. a Bad headgasket.....you dont have to see the symptoms of oil/water mixture to have a bad headgasket. what it sounds like is that water is being pressurized by the combustion chamber on startup witch would result a bad headgasket most likely. one thing you want to do is to do a leakdown test. that will tell you or your mechanic what needs to happen next. hope all this helps.

    ok i was thinking this to. Also was wondering maybe there is a lot of air in the cooling system as I just replaced a hose that ran my cooling system bone dry, I also noticed this busted hose when mt temp gauge climed to H for about 30 sec. But my problem is my bleeder screw is broken and jb welded shut. So i really do not know other ways of bleeding the cooling system. Since i replaced this hose and poured coolant in i have had this problem. Any other ways to bleed the system or do i need a new water neck? Thanks for the input fellas. Note: Also I am running a 1 layered headgasket which leads me to beleive that i need a new 3 layered head gasket.

    Why do you have a one layer headgasket?

    The easiest way to bleed the air out of the system is turn the heater on and let the car idle with the radiator cap off. Obviously you take the cap off the car while the system is cold, otherwise you get a face full of antifreeze.

    listen to what he is telling you to do, I did not know that you had not bled the system...instant failure!!! that is the #2 cause of overheating failures...#1 is the radiator cap.... as your car is running with the cap off, make sure that when the fluid goes down in the radiator, that you add more, and before replacing your cap, make sure you dont see any bubbles coming up...that is air trapped in the system, either from replacing hoses and coming out or a new found leak in the system, so this part is very important. a pinhole in a hose can cause you big problems later on.

    you can test the coolant for combustion gas contamination. it's easy to do. that will tell you if you're leaking at the head-block mating surface or through a cracked sleeve. what you can also do is pull all the spark plugs, then pressurize the system with a pump. crank the motor. if coolant shoots out any of the spark plug holes, it's obviously leaking into the combustion chamber. from your symptoms, it sounds like it is. especially since you say it seizes when trying to start. ie hydraulicing. however, if that were the case, you'd be smoking white...a lot. on start up.
    there could be separate issues here with none of them linked to a leak. as mentioned, try "burping" the cooling system.
    i'd probably test the coolant for combustion gases or run a compression test, then go from there

    ok gotcha, I tried to burp the system with radiator cap off and heat on and there is a ton of bubbles in the coolant, almost looks like it is foaming. I do get white smoke on start up after car has been running and i have to give it 100 perceebt throttle to crank as well

    the system is only under pressure when the cap is on..

    OP water shooting out of the coolant neck is a deffinate sign of a bad HG. looks like you guys have come to that conclusion already though

    sounds like a bad head gasket especially since you mentioned that the temp got all the way up to the H. One word of advice and i CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!, when you do your head gasket, take the head to a machine shop and have them check it with a straight edge for warpage. if it is warped, you will need to have it ground flat, and if its seriously warped, you will need to have the block checked as well. TRUST ME, doing this now will save you time later because pulling a motor apart again once u just finished putting it back together sucks!!

    True story as this was just put together. ok i am gonna go look at a pr3 head tomorrow thats for sale and i have a new cometic HG on the way. Thanks for the HELP fellas.

    Please don't listen to him...a thermostat wouldnt do that...shows that G2IC is lacking knowledgeable members on here..not like before where we were all learning from each other...outburst like that causes nothing but confusion... no explanation or anything...

    Yeah i was wondering how would a theromstat cause the motor to hydro lock upon start up? Besides i already checked that and it is for sure my cheap 1 layer head gasket.
